Route 3.
Church of the Assumption.
The church building is situated on Castle
Street in Dalkey almost
directly opposite the restored Dalkey castle. The church was built
of granite in the early 1840s and has a stunning stain glass
window which is directly
behind the altar. There is a beautiful
baptismal font and if I
recall correctly only two votive
candle shrines inside the main body of the church. The view
of the altar directly up the
nave is exceptional. The local
saint in Dalkey is St Begnet and there is a really well made icon
to her on the western wall. Unusually the church seems to me to
be aligned north/south rather than east/west open to correction on
this as I have never carried a compass. All told I have found the
church
special to visit.
The church is still in practical daily use, with the mornings given
over to Mass,
some Rosary groups in some
churches, and funerals. So unless I intended to
fully attend mass I
would normally keep my three Saints visits to the
afternoons, this is after the 12noon Angelus and before 3.30pm approximately.
